Subject: A Veteran’s Gratitude to the People of Kuwait
Your Excellency,
I am writing to you today as a proud American veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Thirty-five years ago, I stood alongside your people to defend the sovereignty and freedom of the State of Kuwait. It was a defining chapter of my life, and I have always carried a deep respect for the resilience and spirit of your nation.
Over the past week, as our nations have faced the challenges of Operation Epic Fury, I was moved to my core by the footage of Kuwaiti civilians rushing to the aid of our downed F-15E aircrew. Seeing a Kuwaiti citizen offer comfort to a female American pilot with the words, “Thank you for helping us… you are safe,” was a powerful reminder of why we stood together in 1991.
In the chaos of war, your citizens chose humanity. They chose to run toward danger to protect and comfort our warriors. As someone who once served on that same sand, I want to say: Thank you for helping us.
Please convey my deepest thanks to the people of Kuwait, particularly those brave individuals in Al Jahra who protected our aviators. Our countries share a bond forged in fire decades ago, and it is clear that the flame of that friendship still burns brightly today.
With deepest respect and gratitude,
Scott D. White / Electronic Warfare Technician (ELINT) USN
Veteran, Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm
