Excellent Discussion

By Scott

Recently, a friend of mine posted this narrative in response to this graphic on Facebook. (Credit: FB: Phil Davis)

“Is it because of boycotts, or is it because the price of things we need (of which a cup of coffee from Starbucks is not) is rising? Normal people, when they have less disposable income, will decide making coffee at home is way more economical than paying $5 to have someone make it for you.

The other side of this coin is, Starbucks is going to do what it can to recoup or maintain their profit margin. This invariably means cutting staff. Instead of having five people behind the counter, there will be only two. Mary, John and James just went from making minimum wage to making no wage. And even though Rick and Jen will now have to work harder to cover those that were fired, they won’t get paid more. All they’ll get, if they’re lucky, is a speech from management about being “part of a team” and “what their sacrifice really means (to the investors of Starbucks)”. Maybe Rick and/or Jen will quit. Or maybe they’ll feel trapped because that useless degree that some university overcharged them for won’t get them a (better) job anywhere else, and well, the lights need to stay on at the studio apartment.”
