As many of you know, I recently purchased an Apple Macbook Pro. It is a beast of a machine and I really do love working on it. The Retina display is incredible, using the trackpad has completely replaced my mouse (don’t even have on on the desk now). Multiple desktops and screens and it basically just has me in AWE.
One of the downsides to the machine is the lack of standard USB A connection ports. Everything is USB-C. Well I have several external hard drives, an external monitor, my headphones and several SD cards that need to be read periodically.
I purchased an external hub that provides me with standard USB-A connections, MicroSD and Standard SD card reader, Thunderbolt 3 connection as well as an HDMI for my external monitor. It works GREAT! Connects all my equipment and works fine. Only it doesn’t.
When I connect it to my Macbook PRO, I lose all network connectivity. The radio still connects to the WIFI but there is no traffic to and from the computer and the network. Disconnect the hub and poof! Interwebz go whoosh.
Researching the issue provided Apple’s response which was basically, don’t buy their equipment, buy Apple’s equipment (and an exponentially higher price) and the problem goes away. Yeah how to win me over as an Apple user. Assholes.
More research provided a simple fix for literally less than a penny. It works. It is hideous. And it pisses me off to no end. See the video below.
Tin foil wrapped on the dongle lead shields it. Simple as that. This really does piss me off.
