This is the mindset you should have. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter where you are. Whether you are at home, or at a local store. Be prepared and have a plan to rescue and defend yourself. Do not rely on our law enforcement professionals. They do the absolute best they can but they can not be everywhere at once.
Nationwide, the average response time for law enforcement professionals to arrive on scene nationwide is approximately 20 minutes.
While “school shootings” have a bit different flavor, we can use Nashville’s Covenant School shooting as an example. Law Enforcement did a spectacular job of neutralizing the threat. Incredible, especially when compared to others (Vivaldi). But 6 people still died before the shooter was terminated.
From first shots to shooter down.
09:53AM – Shooter arrives on school grounds, parking car
10:11AM – Shooter shoots out glass doors on side of school and enters building
10:13AM – First shots heard and 911 call made
10:23AM – Police are on scene
10:25AM – Police engage and neutralize the shooter
Overall, from the time officers arrived on scene until the shooter was down, about 3 minutes. Times vary according to source but incredible.
However, from first shots until shooter was down roughly 15 minutes. And 6 souls lost.
You can put similar scenarios in play in your local WalMart, Target or convenience store. At best, 5 full minutes until law enforcement arrives on scene.
Take responsibility for your OWN safety and that of your family.
Get trained, keep training, carry a self defense weapon, “war game” in your mind for whatever situation you find yourself in. Identify cover (stops bullets), identify concealment (hides you from threats), find your escape routes, know your surroundings, watch people.
Be aware. Don’t be a threat. Don’t be oblivious.
One of the best quotes by James Mad Dog Mattis: ‘Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.’
